"I'm Hispanic."
"Oh really, where are you from?"
"I was born in the California, but my family is from Guatemala.'"
.....
"Oh, I'm from ****. I was born and raised there. I am a Latina."
This is the way it always goes for those that live on the expectation of being too much and not being enough. Those that are lost between the lines of am I or am I not. This poem is for those that suffer from what I like to call: de aqui y de alla.
-Hate: Ni de Aqui, Ni de Alla-
Your mom is a wetback, but still
let me hit that. Go back to Mexico,
we don’t want you here, but wait,
work my farms. Become enslaved here.
“I hate Mexicans because they’re
criminals” But your people “white” is
what they buy. White is what they inhale,
what they breath, what they fein.
“You bring disaster to our country lands”
-they belong to us. Bow down, all of
you to our guns. No, you cannot be a
part of something from you we stole.
“Wait, we must have more!”
To all the Dreamers and their children,
know you belong here. A la madre con
Trump. You are glory. You are love.
Sigue pa delante.
To those like me who are too Hispanic
for America, know you are life. To those
who talk down on us, please take a hike.
This here is our time, the Strike!
The hate is everywhere. I am not
sorry my skin isn’t fucken pale.
Porque en el future todo los gueros
skin se ase feo como el corazon por
dentro.
To those of you que tienen el
pinche nopal en la frente y no
hablan espanol it’s okay, tu
tambien eses Latino cabron!
To those who are too Hispanic for
America, pero too American for
your Latino Familia, let me tell you,
you belong. Both sides expect the
most when all they do is create
identity holes.
I’m too much of this for them,
but not enough of that for the
rest, but I, you, We, are the best.
Porque nosotros temenos una
ventaja, la oportunidad de ser
pura madre. Lo que se nos pegue
la gana. Somos los lideres de manana.
Me dicen en Latino America que yo
no cuento como Latina porque soy
Americana. Pero, no me aquito guey,
porque nosotros no somos menos porque
somos de aqui y de alla. No hay peros.
Let me make something clear, hate stems
from all wats of life. Me dicen, “eres
Americana? You speeke Spaneesh?”
They say, “your skin is too dark to be
enough for our society, that is why
cops killing you is our priority.”
Hate makes us think we cannot be
good enough here or there.
Between boarders our Ancestors glare.
Hate is a thing that is crystal clear like
the dope you white people don’t buy,
so you swear.
Hate lumps us together. We are NOT
all this or that. We are Mexicans,
Guatemalans, Salvadorians, Colombians,
Chilenos, y mucho mas. Hate is what makes
our cultures in the rivers run.
Away from us they go because being
an American means assimilating and
being an American in Latino America
means being too white for your
roots. Tell me please, are you with
evil in cahoots?
Oops, pero wait, let me get back
to the basics. Let this be a lesson.
The hate YOU give us bleeds onto
others. Para mi ser Negra es
espectacular. Para ti es la muerte.
Pero wait, sabes que? Be afraid of
my skin, my language, my culture.
My rein on you. Be afraid because
your true colors are not new. Your
power will die soon. Hear the wolves
on new moon.
Pero wait! To those of your who
struggle with – ni de aqui, ni de alla
remember you’re double the
God and Goddess. Both worlds
you are allowed to chase.
Both worlds you cannot escape!
Struggling with personal identity because of having roots in more than one group, but not necessarily 100% identifying with one side more than the other, while also simultaneously forming your own personal identity - is no walk in the park! Outside forces and expectations of the world constantly create added burdens for the individual's personal world. Forming and being confident of one's own personal identity is vital in my opinion, because while we all have root-standards that were taught to us, it's up to us to take what we are given and develop our own unique selves.
One huge thing I've always loved about you, Francis, is your ability to separate yourself from the crowd... do you're own thing... and…
