Ordinary Monsters was an absolute journey. Before I say anything else, I want to mention that this book is NOT a smut book, I was mistaken! However, I am soooo pleased with it. The book is about a couple of kids who have supernatural abilities that must stop the “bad” guy from tearing up the world as they know it but are met with an unexpected truth that changes the course of their actions and lives forever. The book is what I like to call a slow starter, as it intricately develops each character and their story leading up to the present time of the book where all the characters meet and interact. I loved that about this book. I really felt like I knew each character, not in an overwhelming way, but in a way that allowed me (the reader) to follow along easily.
An important detail I’d like to point out is the way the author, Miro transitions from one topic to another. The way he makes connections by misconnecting paragraphs. He does a lot of jumping around from one point to the next, sometimes (most times) unexpectedly. To most readers, this will probably be frustrating and difficult to follow, especially since this book is over 600 pages long, but DO NOT FRET. MIRO is a brilliant writer. Trust the process! I felt entirely destroyed because the content was heavy. I fell in love with the characters, specifically Marlow because his story is so special. I was completely immersed and emotionally involved. If you are like me and love reading books with supernatural humans and creatures, this book is for you!
It’s hard for me to write reviews on books that are of the dark/historical genre because it’s not a genre I typically read, especially with it being this long. If you have any recommendations, I would love to hear them, comment below with any books you believe are worth reading.
Overall, I would rate this book a 9/10 and I would most definitely recommend it!
