I was rooting for her so much that I was left even more disappointed by the fact that she didn’t up her game in this book. Hoffman is a renowned author. Her most notable books are Practical Magic and Rules of Magic. I read Hoffman’s work a couple of years back when I was more impressionable because I was a young adult and even then, I hated her writing style. Her syntax kills me EVER TIME. Her run-on explanations do nothing but make my mind wander. I don’t need to know how many different colors the sky is (as an example)! Now, that doesn’t mean that I don’t like description, but that also doesn’t mean that I want to read three pages for ONE description. I thought that after all these years Hoffman would have developed her writing style a little more and her books would be more inviting and well put together, but no, this book was as disappointing as having your ice cream fall out of your hands on a hot summer day. This story is about a young girl who grew up on cult property? I am not entirely certain as the book itself doesn’t specify. Her mother dies, she’s all alone, when she meets her biological grandmother, the grandmother doesn’t care. How creative. How innovative. The girl is a witch, travels back in time and “finds” love. More like stalking I would say, which changes the course of her life and then she ends up pregnant. There is a common theme in Hoffman’s books, witches and magic. We get it, you like this, but how many similar stories can you write until you have nothing else to create? If you are looking for something intriguing and exciting filled with love, this is NOT the book for that! I don’t think I will ever read another Hoffman book to save my LIFE! I rate this book a 2/10, just terrible! It had potential, but it didn’t work.
